My cake posts are like buses, you wait ages for one and then 3 come along at once; the perils of having both kids with birthdays in September.
My son, at 3, is less opinionated than his sister about what cake he wanted, or at least he was until the day before it was made when he suddenly announced he wanted a monkey cake. Well I'd already bought the cake tin and several tons of smarties, so he was stuck with what I had already planned to make him.
I'd seen Enchanted Mommy's number 3 cake on Pinterest and loved the curve of the cake. It was really nice as it hadn't been made in a 3 shaped cake tin, which would have resulted in a flat top, but instead a bundt tin. There are lots of ideas for using bundt tins on Pinterest so I didn't feel guilty about buying a tin for just one cake.
First I made two cakes in my bundt tin, then cut out 1/4 of each ring (I found this was easier to do by freezing the cakes for about an hour) and then flattened the edge where the two cakes met. I stuck the two together with buttercream.
Then its as easy as covering the whole thing in chocolate buttercream and lines of smarties (I entertained my daughter for about an hour getting her to sort smarties into different bowls for me).
I've linked this up to PinAddict's Pinterest Challenge, head over there to see more crafty goodness.
Love the cake it looks amazing
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteWow, looks great! Must admit baking isnt my strong point but wish it was x
ReplyDeleteBaking doesn't have to be your strong point with this cake. It was really easy to do
DeleteWOW!! Totally amazing cake!! That looks amazing. Thanks for linking up. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, it was really quick to do too
DeleteI love your cake! My boy is 3 at the end of the month, supposed to be a halloween themed party though! I wonder how many tubes of smarties I would have to buy to get enough orange ones to cover it :)
ReplyDeleteHmmn, I opened 22 packets of smarties when making this and it was about a 3rd too many. There are 8 colours in smarties (I didn't use the brown), so if I guess I used 15 packets you would need 8 times as many to get all orange? You'd be eating smarties for the rest of the year!
DeleteHa ha I am amused that you managed to get Alex to sort smarties and not eat them!!
ReplyDeleteShe was surprisingly good. I let her eat the ones that were a funny shape
DeleteThat looks sooooo good! The decorations must have taken a while. Hope your boy had a wonderful birthday x
ReplyDeleteActually it took no time at all, very quick and easy
DeleteThat looks amazing! I'm not sure my hand would have produced such a neat pattern, in fact I know it wouldn't have! Hope it tasted good too. x
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it would, once you've done the first line straight all the others just follow the first line
DeleteLooks super - and that's some dedication with the smarties!
ReplyDeleteI had 25 tubes of smarties in my house for a whole month (because they were reduced in the supermarket) and I didn't touch them because they were for this cake - thats dedication!
DeleteWhat a brilliant cake, it looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteCake looks great, you must have had the patience of a saint with those smarties!
ReplyDeleteThanks, it was really quick to do so I'm not claiming any patience
DeleteI love the line of this cake, so smooth and rounded. The lines of the smarties are so straight as well, good work!
ReplyDeleteNipped over from PinChallenge thingy :-)
Thanks, I think the bundt tin will be getting a lot of use. It makes a very pleasingly shaped cake
